STI/HIV Prevention Program Grades 9 – 12
Developmentally, it’s difficult for teens to assess and mitigate risk. Factoring in the fatigue that happens with long-term social distancing, as well as real or perceived barriers to practicing safe healthy behaviors, it’s important to remind teens that the risk of contracting STIs (sexually transmitted infections) remains the same as it was before the pandemic.
Kaiser Permanente’s STI Prevention program is an interactive virtual offering for grades 9 – 12 designed to educate students about STIs and how to protect themselves. It supports the Health Education Content Standards for California Public Schools and is compliant with the California Healthy Youth Act.
The Play (Video Presentation)
What Goes Around tells the story of five friends as they navigate through the final days of high school in their virtual classrooms. When one of them contracts two sexually transmitted infections, the issues of friendship and honesty cause them to question their relationships with each other and to consider their past and future choices.
Following the video presentation, the actor-educators facilitate a live question and answer session to address students’ questions on STIs and other related topics. All questions are answered from a medical perspective.
The actor-educators are also available to host an Instagram (IG) Live feed Q&A where actors promote a specific school. The IG Live will be tailored for the hosted school and include their logo. Teachers are also given the opportunity to be guests on the live feed, however it is not a requirement.
